St. Marks Coptic Church Melbourne

On the 7th of August, the Church will commence the fast of the Holy Blessed Saint Mary. It will conclude with the feast of the Holy Virgin's assumption into heaven which is celebrated on the 22nd of August.

What is it about this fast for the Holy Theotokos that draws the Coptic Orthodox faithful with such fervor?

The fast of Saint Mary is one of the most beloved fasts. It is even said that the lay people enforced this fast on the church as a result of their love for the this holy saint. Up until the thirteenth century, this fast was not officially recongnised by the church.
